Charitable support
Rusfond (in liquidation now) is a UK-based charity and the primary objective is to help seriously ill children from Russia access life-saving medical care in the UK – children whom the Russian healthcare system is incapable of supporting and who do not have the means to pay for necessary medical treatment. The treatment of rare, life-threatening diseases is very expensive due to their infrequent occurrence (1 case per 10, 000 people in Russia and not more than 5 per 10,000 people in the European Union). The supply of medicines and technologies to treat these diseases is limited and costly. The Russian Aid Foundation (Rusfond), established in Moscow by the Kommersant newspaper in 1996, refers children to Rusfond UK for medical treatment in Britain. Rusfond is a leading children’s charity in Russia (it raised over $28 million in 2012 – will update); it publishes the accounts of desperate parents, and encourages readers to donate money so that sick children can receive medical care. The appeals for help that Rusfond brings to light are also re-published in print and electronic mass media in dozens of Russian regions as well as abroad, including the UK. Televised accounts and requests for assistance on Russian television led to several Russians in the UK making donations – and that is how Rusfond UK came into existence.
